Pedants Onymous does not actually exist (or did not until I wrote this page), as far as I know. (A Google search for its name on 2009-07-22 yielded no matches, but did offer two for "Pedants Anonymous", presented on a page with the wonderful heading Results 1 - 2 of about 0 for "Pedants Onymous".One of the two links led me to the Halfbakery, so I was very pleased with my search results.) But if it did exist I'd probably be a member. Maybe I should found it, since I didn't find it; then I could be the first president, and thus the first precedent for any future president. "Onymous" is the opposite of "anonymous". (It's in the dictionary - at least if the dictionary referred to is the 1998 edition of Chambers.) I think we pedants can afford to be onymous. Pedantry is nothing to be ashamed of. (Or, for old-fashioned pedants, it is nothing of which to be ashamed. But they probably won't like my starting the preceding sentence with "Or". And for the same reason they probably won't like my starting the sentence before this one with "But", and the present sentence with "And".) |
